At the heart of Young Minds Academy is Irene Sawiers, an early childhood educator whose passion for nurturing little learners has shaped a network of thriving childcare centres. With the exciting launch of the new boutique centre in Haberfield set for 2025, we sat down with Irene to learn more about her educational philosophy, her personal journey, and what makes her centres so special.

Starting with a Dream

What led you to pursue early childhood education?
“I started in secondary teaching,” Irene shares, “but I kept seeing the same gap—children struggling with literacy because the foundation just wasn’t there. I wanted to build something meaningful from the ground up—literally. Tiny humans, big dreams, better beginnings.”

It was this desire to create strong, meaningful foundations that set Irene on the path to early childhood education. Her enthusiasm for making a difference is clear, particularly when she describes the joy her work brings.
“The most rewarding part? Watching children grow in confidence and curiosity. It’s like seeing little lightbulbs switch on daily.”

The Reggio Emilia Philosophy Explained

Irene’s centres are proudly rooted in the Reggio Emilia philosophy, a child-centred approach that celebrates creativity and individuality. But what does Reggio really mean?

What is the Reggio Emilia philosophy, in simple terms?
“Children are capable, creative, and full of potential. We just need to listen, observe, and get out of the way (a little),” Irene explains. This mindset goes far beyond ticking boxes on a curriculum.

Why did you choose Reggio for Young Minds Academy?
“It’s not a program—it’s a mindset,” she says. “Reggio treats children as partners in learning. That felt right.”

At Young Minds Academy, strategies like child-led learning bring this philosophy to life.
“It’s messy, magical, and meaningful,” Irene describes. “Think mud pies, questions with no easy answers, and deep conversations about dinosaurs. That’s child-led learning in action.”

How do you train your educators to implement the Reggio approach?
“We coach, mentor, reflect,” Irene shares, “and we always keep curiosity at the heart of what we do. Our team’s not just trained—they’re inspired.”

Supporting Creativity, Curiosity, and Community

Parents are often eager to understand how Reggio supports children’s development—not just academically but holistically.

How does Reggio nurture creativity, critical thinking, and independence?
“We don’t hand out answers. We create the space for kids to explore, question, and discover their own.”

This extends to the learning environment itself, an integral part of the Reggio philosophy.

What does ‘the environment as the third teacher’ mean at your centres?
“It means the space speaks. Every corner invites learning, wonder, and connection—even the nappy change area!”

And when it comes to collaboration, it’s not just educators and children who are involved. Parents play a fundamental role too.
“You’re not just invited to be part of it,” Irene says, “you’re essential. We share stories, ideas, and celebrations so the learning continues seamlessly between home and care.”

Her advice for parents considering a Reggio-inspired centre is clear and honest.
“Trust the process. If you’re looking for worksheets, we’re not it. But if you want your child to thrive, you’ve found your place.”

A Spotlight on Haberfield

The launch of the new Young Minds Academy centre in Haberfield marks an exciting milestone for Irene and her team.

What sets the new Haberfield centre apart?
“Haberfield is the dream team in a newly renovated, boutique space,” Irene tells us. “We’re family-owned, heart-led, and capped at just 21 children at a time. It’s quality over quantity, always.”

This small, intimate setting allows educators to deliver highly individualised care and attention. Families will also notice thoughtful design elements that encourage exploration and discovery.

What special features can families find at the new centre?
“A boutique, open, beautifully lit space with seamless indoor/outdoor flow,” Irene says. “We’re big on community connections, proudly inclusive, and seriously committed to excellence… and yes, there’s great coffee nearby—that matters too!”

A Place to Dream, Discover, and Thrive

Young Minds Academy isn’t just about early childhood education. It’s about creating a space where children feel seen, heard, and inspired to thrive. Irene Sawiers’ vision combines timeless values with a modern philosophy, making the Young Minds Academy centres a haven for children to grow.

Whether you’re a parent searching for the right centre or someone curious about the Reggio approach, one thing is certain. At Young Minds Academy, learning isn’t just a phase. It’s the foundation of a child’s lifelong love for discovery.
