Deadly Kindy Jajumbora

The program at Deadly Kindy focuses on culture and identity. For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander jarjums and gundoos this means supporting their individuality, identity and sense of belonging. For the non-Indigenous children, they enhance their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture. The educators work closely with the elders and local communities around the centre. They engage authentically to pass on vital cultural knowledge and skills. 

The jarjums also have a strong connection to country through the centre’s bush tukka gardens, outdoor play environments and environmental education. They learn about environmental responsibility, develop a sense of belonging and understand their role as custodians of country. 

The curriculum at Deadly Kindy is designed to set the jarjums up for success at school and beyond with a lifelong love of learning. With Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at the forefront, the experienced educators provide a safe and healthy learning environment where the culture and learning thrive together. 

The play-based curriculum uses the eight Aboriginal Ways of Learning as the framework for the daily activities and experiences. By using Aboriginal learning techniques, the educators can bring a uniquely Aboriginal perspective to their teaching. The jarjums’ natural curiosity is fostered and the educators involve them in outcome-focused thinking where they can take an active role in their learning.

“My name is Leann and I am a proud Yorta Yorta and Gunai woman.

I have a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and am excited to start my new journey as the Early Childhood Teacher and Manager at Deadly Kindy Jajumbora. I am originally from Victoria, but I have been in Brisbane for the last two years. My husband works in the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) Partnerships team, and we have four children, two sons aged 14 and 12 and two daughters aged 8 and 4. My family and I take great pride in our culture and community and work hard to improve outcomes for our mob. I have worked in the education sector for 13 years and absolutely love it. I’m passionate about improving educational access and outcomes for our mob. I aim for our children to become confident and strong in their cultural identity, achieve their potential and succeed in life. Before starting with ATSICHS Brisbane, I worked in a long day care service, so I’m excited to use my skills to explore a different area of the industry. Working in the early years sector is unlike any other industry – I have so much fun each and every day that it hardly feels like work. The industry gives me a fantastic opportunity to explore my passion for supporting our young ones. When I’m not working, I love getting out in the sunshine playing AFL and coaching junior basketball. I look forward to getting to know my team and the jarjums and families who attend our service.”
