Centre philosophy
Centre philosophy
At Cressy Road Early Learning we continually strive to set the standard for high quality affordable early education and care.
A consistent and safe environment is essential for each child’s development. The welfare of our children is our first and foremost priority. An important element in achieving this is a close relationship between the centre and our families.
Cressy Road Cottages Early Learning is a privately owned, family run centre, with a strong commitment to participative, consultative and collaborative management. We welcome visits, ideas, suggestions and participation from each family.
We acknowledge that children have been learning here for tens of thousands of years and thank the First Australians for being such thoughtful custodians of this land. At Cressy Road Cottages Early Learning we thank the traditional custodians of the land, the Wallumadegal people for sharing their country.
We promise to respect their land, their people, their animals and elder.
Current research shows that the earliest years of a child’s development forms the foundation of their understanding of the world. It is important to us that we create socially responsible community members, capable of reaching their full potential.
We believe that children should have input and guidance in the experiences provided for them, therefore our program is based on emerging topics that interest the children, including a mix of activities and experiences which are child initiated and teacher or child led. Educators and parents are actively encouraged to provide feedback and input for programmed activities, policies and practices.
Children learn and develop best through stimulating and challenging play. Our environment provides the opportunities for children to reach their potential in the areas of physical abilities, expressive arts, problem solving, mathematical skills, language and literacy and the sciences – and most importantly the ability to develop and maintain relationships and to make wise decisions. Our bespoke learning programs allow us to tailor our educational program to reflect to our centre, our community and our families.
Our children are responded to with care and sensitivity and we ensure that each child’s needs are met throughout the day. We believe that each family is unique and that all differences (and similarities) must be recognised and respected. The diverse values of families, educators and our community are incorporated into our daily practices.
We believe that within a secure, warm and loving environment, children require both acceptance and challenge. Our children are given positive guidance within the bounds of age appropriate acceptable behaviour. We model fairness, equity and social justice to all children.
We recognise the importance of our educators in our ability to implement these philosophies to provide the highest quality care. We invest in every staff member through our commitment to individualised training and development programs.
We believe it is essential that the centre play an active role in the local community through our own community interest group and participation in local activities. We believe that we can act as social advocates for our children, helping the broader community understand the importance of early childhood.
To ensure that we remain abreast of changing attitudes and latest ideas, our philosophy, goals, policies and practices will be evaluated by all stakeholders on an annual basis. We welcome your questions, suggestions and comments.
What the parents say
What the parents say
My child attended Cressy Road Early Learning three days per week. It is the only centre in the area that I would recommend. It's very discreet from the front, but wow! It has an unrivaled back garden with chickens, veggie patches, enormous sandpit, amphitheatre and fishing bridge! The play-based programs are fantastic with many extra-curricular programs included in the daily price. Ratios are very low and the preschool program is awesome.

Great centre. Caring and clever educators. A beautiful place to send your baby or child. We are grateful to have found Cressy road xx

My daughter is now 8 and went to Cressy Rd. One thing I always loved was how immersive the learning was. Whether it was building a habitat, recreating the surface of the moon or just being inspired by nature. She still has the same approach to learning today which was inspired early on.
Tina, parent
Our son has been with Cressy for 2.5 years now. We couldn’t speak more highly of the centre and staff. The centre is a warm, homely environment – exactly the kind of place you’d be comfortable leaving your child. It’s devoid of the tacky flashiness seen in a number of new centres, opting for a more natural and organic environment; lots of lovely spaces to play & an enormous leafy backyard. The staff are warm, professional & importantly treat the children with respect. Cressy embraces play-based learning in its truest sense. Our son loves his Cressy family; we highly recommend it.

About the curriculum
About the curriculum
At Cressy Road Early Learning, the learning programs consider the individual needs and interests of each child.
A home away from home for little ones
Babies enjoy their own stand alone home-style cottage at the centre with a sunny playroom and floor to ceiling glass doors. The nursery children spend their days in small groups, making the most of the outdoor space with real grass, a sandpit and an undercover wrap around verandah.
The educators understand that each baby is unique and they seek to follow home routines as much as possible. There are just nine babies in the nursery, allowing for lots of personalised care.
Fun learning spaces surrounded by nature
The active, inquisitive toddlers enjoy their familiar routines at the centre, and the educators are always happy to be adaptive to children’s individual needs.
The educators make the most of stories (whether sung, spoken or read) so that the children are exposed to many more words than they would be in everyday conversation. A language-rich environment utilising different story-telling techniques helps build a strong and diverse vocabulary. Numbers begin to be used for counting and words are used to describe mathematical concepts – more, big, full etc. The toddlers have a dedicated art space with many different materials to choose from. They also love their loose parts play and dramatic play area.
Exploring with play-based learning
The centre’s junior pre-school room is identical in size and layout to the senior pre-school environment. With lots of spaces for children to interact and explore shared learning there are also opportunities for quieter, independent play. Research has shown that play-based learning is the most successful way for children in the early years to develop deep, sustained thinking skills and knowledge which is why a university trained teacher writes individual programs for each child based on their play.
Children activate more areas in the brain when they are physical, happy and confident which means play provides the optimal learning conditions. The centre’s resources are selected based on current research and credible theories, with lots of manipulative toys to help develop fine motor skills, open ended materials to stimulate imaginative play and a wide variety of art materials to create with as well as a range of different types of reading resources, puzzles and building blocks. Children have access to expansive gardens outside along with a massive sandpit and grassed area, where lots of native birds and insects come to visit.
Learn about the world, explore and play
The senior preschool room is generally the last stop before formal schooling. The children enjoy play-based programs, group time, short news presentations and lots of outdoor time.
The educators provide materials and provocations to inspire a sense of wonder; they encourage children to take responsibility for their environment and ownership of their impact on others. The team believes the most fundamental skills needed for school are the ability to get along with others and the confidence to speak up when something is not right.
We also offer a transition program where the children explore all aspects of school including practice days wearing uniforms, eating out of lunch boxes, role playing classroom games and diving into real conversations about what they can expect in order to dissolve fears and concerns and build enthusiasm for life long learning.
Meet the team
Meet the team
The team at Cressy Road Early Learning was hand-picked to ensure all children build secure, strong attachments with the people caring for them. Many of the educators have been with the centre for a number of years, sharing their diverse cultures and language skills. The team does their best to place children with educators who speak the same home language to support bilingual children and their families. There is a balance of female and male educators at the centre at all times.

Programs
Morning
Leah is ten months old and loves to read books and have a cuddle with her educator when she first arrives. Her dad chats to the educator to fill her in on how Leah slept last night, before he heads off to work. A short while after Leah's dad has left, her parents are sent pictures on their app showing Leah happy and engaged in her play and learning.
Lunchtime
Leah enjoys some group time with her friends. Groups are planned to build on strengths and interests of each individual child, to be age appropriate and fun as her educators are singing some nursery rhymes to the children. She enjoys a nutritious lunch meal with her peers and educators, homemade in our kitchen fresh daily. Soon it will be time to have a rest and recharge for the afternoon.
Afternoon
Leah and the other nursery children head outside to the play area where they help the educators check on the herbs in the garden. Leah helps her educator to water the plants. Leah is given autonomy to play and explore and remains supported and supervised at all times. She enjoys afternoon tea, more freshly prepared food, some of which comes from our organic gardens. Refreshed and refueled, she goes back to learning and play.
Morning
James is two and a half years old and likes to play outside when he first arrives. He and his friends head for the sandpit and start making some big sand dunes for the toy trucks to drive over. They move on to the gross motor play equipment and pretend to drive a big truck to the mud kitchen. In the mud kitchen they dig and scoop using all their muscles and make a muddy stew with bark and leaves, mud and water.... having a wonderful time and learning all the while.
Lunchtime
After a lovely group time with some stories and games, James enjoys a freshly homemade meal with his friends and educators. They help to clean up and love the opportunities to be responsible and part of a team. It's time for a rest where he may sleep or enjoy a quiet creative visualization or some quiet activities. Recharged, James and his friend Hannah work on some puzzles together. Their educator is on hand if they need some help.
Afternoon
James helps the educators weed the vegetable garden. He pulls some of the weeds out of the raspberry bushes, before picking a few sweet berries to taste test. James heads off to find his friends and they role play a wonderful game over the bridge which involves visiting the chickens. The cook has given the food scraps for the chickens to enjoy. An educator supports them to feed the chickens and talks with them all about the chickens.
Morning
Elsie is four and a half years old and likes to start her day outside on the play equipment. She and her friends are playing a game of hide and seek with their educator. The run through the bamboo forest giggling!
Lunchtime
Elsie is going to school next year and is looking forward to a visit from a local school teacher who is going to discuss what a typical day in kindergarten is like. As a group they have prepared questions and will each have the opportunity to engage with the teacher.
Afternoon
Elsie and the children have set up their art space outside and are creating paintings of their favorite animals. Elsie finishes off her koala and hangs it up to dry.

We toured so many places around Ryde/Gladesville before deciding to enrol at Cressy Road. As a first time mum, I didn't really know what to look for when choosing a centre, but choosing Cressy Road was a no brainer. Our son was 8 months at the time and a terrible sleeper who only contact napped in a carrier, so I was really worried about how he would settle into daycare if he were to be forced to sleep in a cot. At Cressy Road, the educator giving us the tour listened to my concerns and showed me the carrier they use to wear any contact nappers, which put me at ease straight away to know they were willing to do that. We have been a Cressy Road family for 2 years now. We absolutely love it there. Lovely caring staff with low turnover and great continuity. The staff are REI trained and very much focus on meeting each child's individual needs, which is well-aligned with our respectful/responsive parenting philosophy. There's a huge outdoor play space with vegie gardens and chickens, which the children learn to take care of. The food is amazing and all freshly prepared on site. I could go on and on about all the positives. The owner Nesha Hutchinson genuinely cares about the children, families and staff members. She is highly qualified and a leader of the industry - I think she's the President of Australian Childcare Alliance, so she right up there setting the standards and best practices for the industry, which she and her staff consistently put into practice on the ground at Cressy Road. We genuinely couldn't be happier with our experience. Thank you Nesha, Odette, Denis, Belinda, Beatriz, Annaliese, Claudia, Laura, Sana, Manal, Alice, Angela, Amanda, David, Hinson, and all the amazing staff I've forgotten to name, for your incredible work! Cressy Road is great, my son left Cressy Road last year to go to school, whilst my 3 year old daughter attends Cressy Road. They are quite different kids, my son was quieter and reserved but really clicked with one of the educators and that helped him settle in. My daughter just loves it there, she has a great group of friends, gets on well with the educators (who are really lovely). Everyday when she comes home I ask her about her day and she always says she had a great day. They have a great big outdoor area to play in, they do science and art projects, the food is also really good. Read more
